White & Black
The work here falls into abstract black and/or white paintings. The interplay of positive and negative space and black and white color have long intrigued me. The first four paintings here represent a design scheme -- a loose grid with black horizontal spaces--that has long interested me. (I have also used a tighter grid in paintings. See Grid) This design addresses both positive and negative space and black and white color allocation. The next painting, an anomaly, investigates black/white interplay in an abstract expressionistic manner and less architectural compared to other work. The next series of three paintings rely on the repeating ‘strip’, however obscured it may be. The final two paintings are archived pieces, only modestly reworked, that typify a black all-over with ‘subtle white lines suggesting a loose grid’ design approach.
